Violet Bouquet clip
This clip, made in 1938, features a bouquet of violets. While it illustrates the Maison’s predilection for plants, its iconography, symbolism, and technique are in keeping with the jewelry tradition of the nineteenth century. The violets have engraved and polished amethyst petals centered around a brilliant-cut diamond heart, their different tones capturing the purplish-blue shades of this flower species. These tones contrast with the polished yellow gold of the stalks, tied in a bunch. This piece was a special order, and illustrates the search for a distinctly naturalistic rendition. In the language of flowers, as popularized in the nineteenth century, the violet is associated with the virtue of modesty.
