Cigarette case
This cigarette case, created in 1921, depicting an equestrian scene, is part of a sports theme. Set against a yellow gold background with black enamel stripes, it is decorated with racehorse, a popular nineteenth-century iconographic. The rider is depicted as if captured live. He wears red cap, black boots, and jockey blouse, bearing his stable’s colors. This exquisitely delicate miniature drawing reproduces the anatomical details of the rider and his mount thanks to the precision of the enamel technique. In the 1920s, horse races were important places to be seen in society. For members of the Arpels family, frequenting such sociable events enabled them to spend time with future clients, winning them over.
