A taste for distant lands, in particular the Far East, was clearly seen in the Maison’s work during the1920s, largely through the appropriation of techniques, materials, and motifs. This was the case for Buddha iconography, applied to various typologies from jewelry to precious objects. This piece dating from 1928, depicts the god in a seated posture (virasana; vajraparyanka), carved out of block of mauve jade. The ashtray appears to show the god in the bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture, where he claims the earth as witness to his enlightenment. The figure is seated on a lapis lazuli base sculpted to form an ashtray.
